Evita Review

Playbill: Evita

What is the plot of Evita?

Evita is about the life of Eva Duarte, an Argentinian actress with humble beginnings. She is a determined go-getter who wants to be a star. This dream becomes a reality when Eva meets and marries Juan Perone. Evita’s ambition helps Perone rise to the office of President of Argentina. Due to her charisma, style and charitable works, she rose to great popularity.  In her short life, Eva became saint-like in the eyes of her people, but not everyone loved her.  Che, the narrator, relays the other side of the story to the audience.

My Thoughts on Evita:

  • Solea Pfeiffer (who is Evita) is a powerhouse; she dwarfs every other actor. I loved her voice and felt she was the perfect casting choice. She is larger than life, which I guess is similar to how Evita was.
  • Jason Gotay as Che is a talented vocalist, but again, he was not strong enough to be opposite Ms. Pfeiffer.
  • The dancing and choreography are beyond awesome.
  • The set has an exposed second story which houses a full orchestra. I enjoyed watching the musicians play.
  • The music of Andrew Llloyd Webber does not disappoint.  He is a genius!
  • The staging and use of lights was simple and perfect.  I loved the color choices.
  • The decision to have two actors playing the leading role was a good one, however, I did not love the casting director’s choice for “young Eva”.
  • Disappointingly, I felt that the whole beginning of Act 1 was rushed.  The music went so quickly that it was hard to understand the lyrics.

Is Evita good for kids?

Nope. The plot is thick and complicated and the music is dark. I don’t think most young kids would be able to follow and enjoy this show.

What’s the bottom line?

Go see it now…its a limited run!
